I spent Monday on Capital Hill with a group of 28 CEOs and founders of health IT companies from across the country coming together to seek clarity in legislation that was written pre-iPhone and some before the internet. Big thanks to the Athena Health staff for including me and Jonathan Bush for being a witty and entertaining host.
It was a fascinating peek into how congress operates and the genuine interest of senate and congressional staffers to listen to a group of entrepreneurs seeking change. Key discussion points were the recent repeal of the SGR (Sustainable Growth Rate) for Medicare providing more stability in Medicare funding; the 21st Century Cures initiative and the ambiguity of FDA regulation over health IT.
My group of 4 CEOs met with staff from Congressman Phil Roe's (TN) office, Senator's Deb Fisher (NE), Jeff Session (AL), Angus King (ME) and Chuck Grassley (IA) offices. The day ended with an interoperability panel hosted by Jonathan Bush from Athena.
It was great to meet a bunch of entrepreneurs from all over the country with new ideas/businesses. I spent some time with Noah Weiner from Avhana and Andy O'Hara of Chiron Health both with very interesting technology and businesses.
Looking forward to doing it again.
